The enthusiastic and unanimous reception of booksellers, the press and the public at the publication of Volume I, in October 1997, created a sort of event around the Sursis. The immediate success of this work carried by word-of-mouth demonstrates once again that one does not cheat with the readers. Jean-Pierre Gibrat, a writer and draftsman in one person, gave them the best of himself: a detailed description of a situation that is difficult to accept, a fluid narration that makes this situation credible, images whose strength and Quality reinforce this credibility. It is, in short, the result of an admirable and long work on the substance and form, the savory fruit of a profound sincerity of the author.
In the small village of Cambeyrac, in Aveyron, the war occupies all the minds, but life does not stop for that: pastis on the terrace and part of bowls in front of the coffee, life could be harder without counting on the mobilization order, which sends all the young guys from the corner to the massacre, and the incursions of the German army into the streets of the village, which quickly reminded the population of a sad reality. Thus the thread of history takes place, between the obstinacy of some to ignore the conflict and the willingness of others to take an active part in it. The inhabitants of Cambeyrac are divided between those who await the arrival of the Allies with impatience and those who do not hide their sympathy for the cause of the occupier. Like a whole people and each one in their own way, all engage in a fratricidal struggle that sees the comrades of yesteryear fighting with arms in their hands. Sojourn.
