Champagne, February 1357. Henri, bishop of Troyes, rides towards the lazaretto of Lirey, in an attempt to convince his cousin Lucie, with whom he is in love, to renounce his religious vows.
In the chapel where they are gathered, the monks make this bitter observation: the boxes are empty, and the works of the abbey, which must accommodate a piece of the True Cross, will soon be stopped, for lack of means… We have done the oath to build an abbey that will welcome the relic, and we will be faithful to our word, whatever it costs, exclaims Thomas, the prior of the community.
