Chevalier Brayard (2017)

Chevalier Brayard is on his way back home from the crusades, accompanied by the young monk Rignomer. On their travels, they cross paths with a young girl, Princess Hadiyatallah, who turns out to be a hostage on the run. Brayard does not hesitate for a moment: he decides to escort the princess back to the orient to return her to her father in exchange for a ransom, and drags Rignomer along on the adventure. Philippe Tome, Mac Hardy - FIRE 1 (2005) (Scantilation)

A rocket carrying a human baby girl crashes on a distant planet where intelligent dinosaurs have developed a civilization. I really like Hardy's cartoonish style here. Unfortunately, due to disagreements between the creators and the publisher, the series will not be continued, even though a second album was written and drawn. Some nudity and violence.

Griffo - Beatifica Blues vol 1

The world has become a vast desert and to survive, humans need the Beatifica Blues, a little miracle pill to breathe. This pill has become the currency, and it is the government that manages it. Beatifica Blues is a 1980s post apocalyptic fiction so it is somewhat dated but that's fine, it is still million times better than your average American comic. The series was 3 volumes, and is simply the prologue of the Samba Bugatti series. The plot isn't very logical at times and Dufaux himself admits it, but it was an early work by him.

Nevertheless (2020)

This is Jordi Lafebre's first outing as a writer, you might know him as artist (with Zidrou doing the writing) on Glorious Summers, Vice Squad and Lydie. I reckon he's done a good job on this one, seems to have learned a lot working with Zidrou. What we have here is a cute little romance story, with the twist that it's told in reverse and begins with the pair ending up together and ends with the meet-cute.

In Pieces (Marion Fayolle) (2013)

A man comes home to his lover, his hands tainted by the dress of another woman. A few pages later, a couple fight for the custody of their daughter until she's cut in two. In Pieces is a beautiful book of visual poetry, in which all common metaphors are explained through images only.

The Tenderness of Stones (Marion Fayolle) (2019)

“We buried one of dad’s lungs,” announces the narrator of The Tenderness of Stones. The lung is so large it takes three men to carry it—and that is just the beginning. The family looks on as, under the dispassionate orders of anonymous white-clad strangers, their father is disassembled, piece by piece: His nose is removed from his face and tied, temporarily, to his neck; his other lung is pulled out and he is forced to lug it around in a cart; his mouth is pried off and stored away, leaving him mute. Beneath it all is one devastating truth: Soon, he will be gone entirely.

By all appearances they are a happy couple. Married, religious, hardworking. What happens behind closed doors, however, is a secret, even to those closest to them. “Kwaśne jabłko” (Sour Apple), written by Jerzy Szyłak and illustrated by Joanna Karpowicz, tells a story of domestic abuse, a story of a victim and persecutor. This story of violence spiraling out of control brings no hope, instead playing on emotions and powerful illustrations, painted with acrylic on canvas-textured paper, to create a unique atmosphere of horror. It is violence as seen by a painter. In truth, no one would like to hear this kind of story, and yet such stories are told, and need to be told. They need to be told because they happen to real people, be they old or young, educated or uneducated, pious or atheist. None of these people wants to take a bite from the sour apple in the basket. However, it happens to some. That is why such stories must be told.

The Muse (2018)

Despite his crippling debts, Balaguer refuses to sell his painting of Mar, the woman he loves, who vanished without a trace a few months previously. Balaguer’s behavior raises suspicions with the police, even more so since the disappearance of the corpse of another woman Balaguer had painted…

Vice Squad

It is the winter of 1937, and Aimé Louzeau lives with his mother and their servant. One day, he goes to the Quai des Orfèvres, the police prefecture of Paris, to speak with the vice squad. He currently works in the Criminal Investigation department, but crimes of passion and back alley stabbings really aren't his thing, so he requests a transfer from Chief Inspector Séverin. The atmosphere immediately darkens, as Louzeau is thrown straight into the interrogation of a pimp called Guapito and his prostitute.

Shi

To hide a scandal that could harm the prestigious World Expo, the corpse of an infant is buried in the gardens of the place that hosts this event. Two women, an English nobleman and a Japanese woman, the mother of the child, go on a crusade against the British Empire to elucidate this crime. Ducobu

L'Élève Ducobu is a comic series created by Zidrou (scenario) and Godi (drawing). The series tells the adventures of Ducobu, a comic and eccentric dunce. The series first appeared in September 1992 in the Belgian comics magazine Tremplin. The first album was published in 1997 by Le Lombard and from this year have appeared in the French comics magazine Le Journal de Mickey.

L’élève Ducobu is an assortment of gags. Most of the story takes place at the Saint-Potache school, but some strips deal with the main character's private life and take place at home. Other strips go back into the past of the characters. Each album generally begins with the start of the school year and ends with the summer holidays.
