Mademoiselle Baudelaire (2021)

Yet it is Jeanne Duval, the one the poet loved the most and the most accursed, that the designer has chosen to revisit in this masterpiece the sulphurous and autobiographical material of the Fleurs du mal. Of Jeanne, however, we know almost nothing, neither her real name, nor her date of birth, nor her date of death. No letter signed by his hand has reached us. There are still a few testimonies, portraits drawn by Baudelaire himself, an unauthenticated photo of Nadar, not to mention the poems she inspired in him. Clarke & Kubrick

Alfonso Font started writing these in 1982 for the Spanish magazine Cimoc. Clarke is a space engineer and the “brain” of the duo, Kubrick is a spaceship pilot and the “brawn” - being instinctual and extremely volatile. Their names are obvious cultural references (to a famous sci-fi writer and a famous director, if you couldn’t already tell) but they look nowhere like their namesakes - they’re more like grumpy, hairy Spanish peasants :) A great series that always makes me laugh, while also taking me to the ends of the universe - there are some seriously impressive cosmic and planetary vistas here.
