On June 6, 1944, 14,000 Allied paratroopers from the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division landed in the hinterland of the Utah Beach stretch of beach and conquered the town of Sainte-Mère-Église. They should secure the area until reinforcements come. This action became known as the start of Operation Overlord.
